Morihei Ueshiba O'Sensei, Founder of Aikido The Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) was one of the foremost martial artists of his time and is known among his followers as O'Sensei ("Great Teacher"). After decades of studying traditional samurai war arts, he attained spiritual enlightenment, recognizing the illusory nature of victory based on destroying the other. This led him to develop Aikido, an art that affirms and cultivates trust and love among human beings.

"In the Art of Peace, we never attack. An attack is proof that one is out of control... To injure an opponent is to injure oneself. To control aggression without inflicting injury—that is Aikido."    — Morihei Ueshiba O'Sensei
